Day 1

DEPART HOME

Overnight flight to Lisbon

Day 2

LISBON

Welcome to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, a great seafaring city situated where the Tagus River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Welcome to Europe! The sightseeing tour shows us Vasco da Gama’s tomb inside Hieronymite Monastery, the medieval quarter of the city and views of the Belem Tower. Then time at leisure to maybe take an optional excursion to Cascais? Tonight, you will dine whilst listening to haunting Fado melodies.

Day 3

LISBON - FATIMA - PORTO

A scenic drive north through the magnificent Serra d’Aire Mountains brings you to the Shrine at Fatima, site of celebrated religious miracles. Continue north to Porto, the hilly city at the mouth of the Rio Douro.

Day 4

PORTO - SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA - SALAMANCA

The morning guided sightseeing tour takes us through a jumble of styles, eras and attitudes: narrow medieval alleyways, extravagant baroque churches, prim little squares and wide boulevards lined with stately beaux-arts edifices. See Ribeira district - Porto’s historic centre, a Unesco World Heritage zone of winding lanes, zigzagging staircases and tiled churches peering around every corner. Cross the border into Spain. Arrive in the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela. Your Guide will explain the ‘Way of St James' and why hundreds of people walk here as part of a pilgrimage on a daily basis. Later, arrive in Salamanca where you view Plaza Mayor during your orientation tour. Dine tonight sampling aromatic paella or filling tapas in one of the most emblematic buildings in medieval Salamanca.

 

Day 5

SALAMANCA - ÁVILA - MADRID (2 NIGHTS)

The morning guided sightseeing tour takes us to Plaza Mayor, Salamanca’s university founded in 1218, Catedral Nueva, Catedral Vieja. In the afternoon continue to Ávila sometimes called the Town of Stones and Saints. Pass Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains. Arrive to Madrid, Europe’s highest capital city.

Day 6

MADRID - EXCURSION TO SEGOVIA

In the morning enjoy excursion to the medieval UNESCO World Heritage city of Segovia. See the Alcázar, the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe. In the afternoon your expert Local Guide shows you the sights of Madrid including Cibeles fountain, the Gran Via, Paseo de la Castellana and Puerta del Sol. Stop at Plaza de Espana to admire the monument to Cervantes. Afterwards, consider a visit to the famous Prado Museum featuring a large collection of works by Velazquez. This evening, you might be tempted by Madrid’s nightlife, where the locals dine late and enjoy the open-air cafes and vibrant atmosphere until the early hours!

Day 7

MADRID - TOLEDO - GRANADA - COSTA DEL SOL

Today your Local Expert Guide takes you on a walking tour of Toledo. Visit the Church of Santo Tomé, home to one of El Greco's most famous paintings – The Burial of Count Orgaz. Visit the Synagogue during your guided walk through the narrow streets. Visit an inlaid steel factory for a Cultural Insight and see local craftsmen at work. Admire the breathtaking landscape during your drive south, through the heart of La Mancha to Granada in Andalucia. Your Local Expert Guide takes you on a visit to the incredible Alhambra Palace, built in the 14th century and a magnificent example of Moorish architecture. Admire the ancient stucco work, quiet courtyards and colossal walls. In the evening, arrive to Málaga on the famous Costa del Sol.

Day 8

COSTA DEL SOL - GIBRALTAR - TANGIER - RABAT - CASABLANCA

Travel along the Mediterranean coast and cross to North Africa by ferry. Arrive in Tangier. Continue to the capital city, Rabat, where you view the Mausoleum and Royal Palace. Continue on to Casablanca, scene of Humphrey Bogart's most magical moments. On arrival your tour with a Local Expert Guide includes a panoramic drive of the Corniche, plus views of the Hassan II mosque with the world's tallest minaret and a visit to the market with its maze of twisted streets.

Day 9

CASABLANCA - MARRAKECH (2 NIGHTS)

In the morning time for leisure. At noon continue to the city of Marrakech, Africa’s most popular year-round sun resort. It was once the favourite holiday spot of Winston Churchill, a haven where he used to relax and paint.

Day 10

MARRAKECH AND EXCURSION TO BERBER VILLAGE IN THE OURIKA VALLEY

This morning your guided sightseeing tour includes the Bahia Palace and the vast Djemaa el-Fna Square with its palm readers and acrobats. Then there is time at leisure for bargain hunting in the many souks and bazaars or perhaps take an excursion to a Berber village in the Ourika Valley.

Day 11

MARRAKECH - ATLAS MOUNTAINS - FEZ

Travelling through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains to the Imperial city of Fez, Morocco's second-largest city is spectacular. Visit the fascinating Medina of Fez with your Local Expert Guide. View the fortifications and Royal Palace. Admire traditional Moroccan handwork during a visit to a carpet showroom.

Day 12

FEZ - SEVILLE

A memorable drive past the Rif Mountains brings you back to the Mediterranean coast. Board the ferry for the return journey back across the Straits of Gibraltar to the Spanish mainland and Europe. Continue your journey through the Jerez vineyards, home of sherry. Arrive to Andalusia's most beautiful city, Seville.

Day 13

SEVILLE - LISBON

See the Giralda Tower during your sightseeing tour with a Local Expert Guide. Admire the tiled fountains, pavilions and ponds in the Maria Luisa Park and visit the imposing Plaza de España. See Christopher Columbus' ornate tomb in the Cathedral and enjoy a walk through the Jewish Quarter. Your panoramic journey continues through the province of Huelva, famous for Jabugo ham and the Rio Tinto mines, enter Portugal, arrive to Lisbon.

LISBON - HOME

This morning it is time to bid farewell to your Travel Director and new found friends as your Mediterranean-African exotic holiday comes to an end. Transfer to Lisbon airport. Departure.
